I will begin the session with a demonstration of how I teach students to "read" an editorial cartoon. I will hand out a worksheet that has three cartoons on it, and we will look for the literary devices used by the artist, such as irony, hyperbole, contrast, symbolism, etc. After that, I will talk about how I have students create editorial cartoons about the literature we read. I will show student examples from "Friday Night Lights" and "Huckleberry Finn". If there is time, I will show how I have students publish their own editorial cartoons in my journalism classes on our school newspaper website to go along with opinion editorials they write about their own school and community, empowering their voices and inspiring change.
